The potential of urban waste lands

L'île de la Chèvre - A site in Chemical Valley in the process of being abandoned

Lara Almarcegui marches back and forth all over the Clochettes district in Saint-Fons on the lookout for "places of interest", "vacant lots, wasteland, buildings due for demolition; places which, because of neglect [...] are open to all sorts of possibilities". At the end of her investigations in the heart of the city, she invites the public to experiment, explore and preserve as long as possible the spaces thus reclaimed.

At LE CAP – Centre d’arts plastiques de Saint-Fons

Lara Almarcegui's project in Saint-Fons explores the situation of the "île de la Chèvre", located on the Rhône river, and its stages of development, since its arrangement in the 60s until its current abandonment. The island itself is an artifical product from the industrial activity in the Chemical Valley. Its exploitation, access and future depend on this particular and sensitive location. Lara Almarcegui's research takes shape in a publication, as well as an exhibited list of the various materials constituing the island.
